How the calorie-deficit estimate is calculated
This calculator starts with the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) you provide. It converts an intended weekly change into a daily planning deficit using weekly pounds × 3,500 ÷ 7, then subtracts that deficit from TDEE. The 3,500 kcal-per-pound approximation is historically associated withWishnofsky M., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1958) (The historical 3,500 kcal-per-pound approximation.). It is useful for transparent arithmetic, but it does not mean every pound of scale change always contains exactly 3,500 kcal or that weight follows a straight line.
A worked calorie-deficit example
Suppose estimated maintenance expenditure is 2,500 kcal/day and the selected planning rate is 1 lb per week. The static calculation gives 1 × 3,500 ÷ 7 = 500 kcal/day. Subtracting that from maintenance gives a provisional target of 2,000 kcal/day. Over the first week, however, the scale might fall more or less than one pound because sodium, carbohydrate intake, hydration, bowel contents, and menstrual cycling can move body weight independently of fat. The useful test is whether average weight changes in the intended direction over multiple comparable weeks while energy, mood, recovery, and training remain acceptable.
The static deficit caveat
A fixed 500-calorie gap does not produce an indefinitely fixed loss rate. As body mass changes, the energy required to maintain it changes too. People can also alter spontaneous movement, training output, food absorption, and resting expenditure. Choosing and reviewing a target
Start with a trustworthy TDEE. An equation-based result is only a first estimate; maintenance inferred from consistent intake and trend-weight records is more personal. Keep weighing conditions and food logging methods stable enough to compare weeks. If the four-week trend differs materially from the plan, revise the TDEE or deficit modestly rather than making a dramatic correction after one day. The calculator flags a daily deficit above 1,000 kcal or 25% of entered TDEE, but that warning is not a guarantee that every smaller deficit is safe. It also applies no arbitrary calorie floor because appropriate minimum intake depends on the person and clinical context.
Common mistakes
- Entering an inflated TDEE. Overstating activity makes the target look higher while preserving a larger deficit only on paper.
- Assuming the rate is guaranteed. The 3,500 rule is a static approximation, not a forecast that accounts for metabolic adaptation or adherence.
- Chasing daily scale noise. Make decisions from multi-week averages gathered under similar conditions, not yesterday’s change.
- Ignoring performance and health signals. Persistent fatigue, poor recovery, menstrual disruption, dizziness, or food preoccupation deserve attention, not a larger deficit.
Limitations and safety
The result cannot determine body composition change, nutrient adequacy, or a medically appropriate rate. It assumes the TDEE input is meaningful and uses pounds as the rate unit. It cannot account for pregnancy, lactation, adolescence, endocrine conditions, medications, fluid shifts, or eating-disorder risk. What is a calorie deficit?
A calorie deficit means energy intake is below energy expenditure over time. The body supplies the gap from stored energy, but scale change also reflects water, glycogen, digestive contents, and changes in lean tissue.
Does a 500-calorie daily deficit guarantee one pound per week?
No. That is the prediction from the static 3,500-calorie approximation. Real weight change is dynamic, and expenditure, body composition, water balance, and adherence change over time.
Where should my TDEE input come from?
Use a reasonable maintenance estimate from the TDEE calculator or, preferably, infer it from several weeks of consistent calorie and body-weight tracking. A poor TDEE estimate directly shifts this result.
Should I eat back exercise calories?
Usually exercise should already be represented in the TDEE entered here. Adding wearable-reported exercise calories again can double-count activity. Compare your planned intake with actual trends before adjusting.
