Macro & Protein Calculators

Use the macro calculator when you already have a calorie target and want protein, carbohydrate, and fat together. Enter calories, body weight, and a goal: Maintain, Cut, or Build. Maintain requests 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram and 30 percent of calories from fat. Cut requests 2.2 grams per kilogram and 25 percent fat. Build requests 1.8 grams per kilogram and 25 percent fat. Carbohydrate gets the calories that remain, using 4 kcal per gram for protein and carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram for fat. You can edit the protein and fat requests. The finished shares stay inside the adult ranges of 10 to 35 percent protein, 20 to 35 percent fat, and 45 to 65 percent carbohydrate. If a request falls outside, the page adjusts the split and says so.

Use the protein calculator when you do not have a calorie target. Enter total body weight in kilograms or pounds and choose Sedentary or Active. Sedentary applies 0.8 grams per kilogram. Active applies 1.4 to 2.0 grams per kilogram and keeps that range, rather than a single number for a finer activity label. It uses total body weight, not lean mass. Pounds are converted to kilograms first.

The macro calculator places a protein request next to carbohydrate and fat inside the calorie budget, and it may lower the protein share to stay inside those ranges. The protein-only page will not always match it. Changing the split cannot fix a calorie target that is too high or too low.

Have a calorie target and a body weight for the full split. For protein alone, body weight and the Sedentary or Active choice are enough.

The preset protein and fat requests are planning choices on the macro calculator, not universally required doses. The adult ranges that limit the finished shares are the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges from the Institute of Medicine Dietary Reference Intakes. If a custom request would fall outside, the page clamps the shares and says so. When the carbohydrate floor or ceiling changes the total, the remainder goes to protein first and then to fat so the three shares still add to 100 percent. The macro page cites the ISSN position stand on protein and exercise as context for protein and training, and it treats the AMDR as a population framework, not a sports-performance prescription. Carbohydrate is the energy left after protein and fat.

The protein calculator uses two of those sources for protein alone. Sedentary is the adult RDA baseline in the Institute of Medicine Dietary Reference Intakes. Active is the ISSN range for exercising individuals, kept as a range because that position stand does not assign a separate multiplier to finer training labels. Inputs are total body weight only. Body fat percentage, lean body mass, and calories are not used. Pounds are converted to kilograms and left unrounded until the final grams.

Use the macro calculator when protein, carbohydrate, and fat must share a calorie target you already chose. Use the protein calculator when you have no calorie target. Clamping can leave the macro page with fewer protein grams than the protein page at the same weight. If the calorie target changes, run the macro calculator again. Fiber, micronutrients, and food variety sit outside both calculations.
